Oreal Perkins, a nurse practitioner who’s been doing coronavirus care house calls in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has her feet firmly planted in her community, but her eyes on a future when essential workers are cared for and respected by those in positions of leadership:

“I know you are wondering why I have this look in my eyes, but I’m just reflecting on my sisters and brothers in healthcare who still to this day do not have enough masks and gloves to take care of their patients. I am wondering why if we are considered Essential Personnel, then why aren’t our essential needs being met?

Keep our struggles at the forefront of your mind as you listen to the daily press conferences and news briefings. Know that a lot of us are being silenced or we are just tired and have not spoken up. That is changing today!”

I know you are wondering why I have this look in my eyes, but I’m just reflecting on my sisters and brothers in healthcare who still to this day do not have enough masks and gloves to take care of their patients. I am wondering why if we are considered Essential Personnel, then why aren’t our essential needs being met? What bothers me the most is when you turn on the news or come to social media and some of our politicians claim to make sure we have the required resources such as masks and gloves yet we are still taking donations, making cloth masks and sending masks to hospitals and other facilities. I myself even launched a go fund me to send masks to nurses that don’t have enough and are terrified to work but also don’t want to risk losing their jobs. Frontline workers such as myself can’t just stay home. We can’t quit because the loopholes in unemployment rules make sure we don’t get paid. So basically we are forced to work and take care of the most vulnerable population, risk our lives, not have the required resources and get made a mockery of by officials claiming we are taking the supplies out the back door. 2020 is the year of the Nurse and we are top respected profession according to polls, so why is it that our president would even make such a malicious claim. This is not something we should take lightly and as we are held to a certain standard, I urge you to hold your elected officials to the same standards. Keep our struggles at the forefront of your mind as you listen to the daily press conferences and news briefings. No that a lot of us are being silenced or we are just tired and have not spoken up.
